We thank God for all that he has been doing in recent years to renew the life of our church and bring a fresh passion for loving God and our neighbours.

You are welcome to join us in fulfilling this vision.

history

St. Cuthbert’s in Brighton was established as part of the Free Presbyterian Church in Victoria during the 1850’s. From its early beginnings St. Cuthbert’s has been engaged in the spiritual battle to maintain the truths of the gospel. In the early 1900’s key leaders at St. Cuthbert’s played a significant role in revival that touched the hearts of people throughout Melbourne. During the 1902 visit of Reuben Torrey and Charles Alexander to Melbourne the Session of St. Cuthbert’s reported:

“The simultaneous mission recently held in Melbourne and suburbs we refer to with thanksgiving. Our congregation joined heartily in the movement. Six Home Prayer Meetings conducted by the minister and the elders were held. And we have had the joy of reaping fruit in the conversions for Jesus Christ, and increased interest in spiritual things.”

Today we are part of the Presbyterian Church of Australia and in recent years the Lord has been moving by his Spirit to renew the gospel and its power to transform people’s lives so that this might again be the focus of our witness into the Brighton community.

We are delighting again in the rich truths of the Bible, the promises of God, the revelation of his character and the life of Jesus Christ his Son who came into this world to bring us back to God. We are seeing the work of the Holy Spirit bring a new love for God, for one another and for our community and we are praying again for genuine spiritual revival in our days.

Recent developments

Significant progress has been made in completing the projects approved by the Congregation, Presbytery and the Trusts Corporation/Board of Investment and Finance.

Landscape Design for 2nd Tennis Court. This landscape project has been completed and has brought new life to the run-down tennis court area. The garden area is part of the overall vision to establish a new hospitality and multi purpose outdoor space capable of servicing the needs of a growing and vibrant congregation.
New Church Sign. An attractive new sign with digital screen has been placed at the front of the church on Wilson Street to provide opportunities to inform the community of church activities and share encouraging messages to witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. At Easter and during this Coronavirus crisis it has been a joy to share with our neighbours that Jesus is alive and that death has been defeated. Good news is so needed in the world today and our new sign gives us the means to share this with others.

Repainting of Church Interior. Following the repair of roofing over the southern porch and some re-plastering of damaged walls the Board has been able to move forward with the repainting of the entire interior of the Church, porches and vestry. This work was extensive and involved significant scaffolding inside the building but has brought a delightful atmosphere of light into the sanctuary.
